Presented by the CAGS MIS (Laparoscopic Colectomy) Task Group

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is an operation that almost all General Surgeons perform. Despite our familiarity with this operation, we know how difficult it can be for several reasons including inflammation, aberrant anatomy, as well as other factors. This presentation goes over a standardized approach to safe laparoscopic cholecystectomy that can help General Surgeons navigate the toughest cases while staying safe and staying laparoscopic. Topics discussed will include the role of landmarking and intraoperative timeouts; the importance of the Critical View of Safety, when to use subtotal cholecystectomy, and when to open.

Learning Objectives

  • To understand how routine landmarking and intraoperative time outs promote a culture of safety during laparoscopic cholecystectomy
  • To review the Critical View of Safety and other gold-standard approaches for safe laparoscopic cholecystectomy
  • To understand the role of laparoscopic subtotal cholecystectomy
